Atlanta, GA — For world champion cheerleader Angel Rice, the Pro Cheer League represents more than just another tryout. It represents a chance to make history again - this time as part of the first-ever professional league for the sport she has dedicated her life to.
“It’s always been a dream to do what I love and be paid for it,” Rice said. “When I heard there was going to be a pro cheer team, I thought, no way. But it’s real and I’m excited.”
Rice, who has set world records and become one of the most recognizable names in cheer, admitted this moment feels different.
“It definitely feels different it’s like working on a skill for so long, and once you finally master it, you can do it with your eyes closed, without even warming up,” she explained. “It’s a huge relief, and it feels like we’re writing a new part of history. I’m just thankful to be part of it.”
Preparing for the tryouts wasn’t just mental; it was grueling physical work. “Once I saw the applications open, I started tumbling every day, icing every day, cardio, calisthenics, and physical therapy,” she said. “I wanted to make sure I could get through a routine. At 26, I have to take care of my body, but I’m ready.”
What makes this league stand apart, Rice said, is the fact that athletes will finally be compensated for their skills. “The biggest difference is that athletes have the opportunity to be paid for their talents. It may not be a lot to start, but it’s something and it’s going to grow.”
Her motivation isn’t only personal achievement, but the energy of being surrounded by the best. “The energy for tryouts today was amazing. I didn’t see a bad tryout. Everyone was incredible.”
And while making the team would be a milestone, Rice said what excites her most are the lifelong connections: “I’m really big on relationships. Once I meet you and I love you, I want to hang on to that relationship forever.”
Asked to capture the moment in one word, she didn’t hesitate: “Motivated. With so much talent around you, how could you not be?”
If she makes the team, Rice knows she’ll be part of something groundbreaking. “It’s making history again but this time, not just for me. For the sport as a whole.”
