Skills & Legalities

I. GENERAL

  1. An individual may jump/rebound over another individual.
  2. Drops such as knee, seat, front, back, and split drops from a jump, stunt, or inverted position are not allowed unless there is weight-bearing contact on the hands or feet to help break the impact of the drop.Shushunovas are allowed.

II. GENERAL TUMBLING

  1. Dive rolls are allowed.
  2. Up to 1 flipping and 3 twists, or 2 flips with zero twists.
  3. A tumbler may rebound from his/her feet into a stunt transition.
  4. Tumbling while holding or in contact with any prop is not allowed.

III. SPOTTERS

A spotter is required:

  1. During 1-arm stunts above prep level.Excludes: Cupies and liberties (with no body position variations).
  2. When the load/transition involves:
    a. A release move that exceeds 1 twist.
    b. A release move with an inverted position landing at prep level or above.
    c. A free flip.
  3. Inverted top person above prep level.
  4. When the top person is released from above ground level to a 1-arm stunt.
  5. Single-based stunts with multiple top persons require a separate spotter for each top person.
  6. Coed-style tosses to a new base (tossing base may become the spotter).

IV. STUNTS

A. Levels
  1. Single leg extended stunts are allowed.
B. Twisting
  1. Up to 3 twists allowed.
C. Release Moves
1. Release moves must NOT:

a. Land inverted.

Exception 1: Ground-level handstand released to hand-to-hand stunt with 0 twisting and 0 flipping.
Exception 2: Release from prep level or below to prep level inverted position with 0 twisting and 0 flipping.

b. Exceed 18 inches above extended arm level of the bases (not the back spot).

  • If distance exceeds the length of the top person’s legs plus an additional 18 inches, the skill must follow Toss or Dismount rules.

c. Come in contact with other top persons in separate release moves.

  • Exception: Single-based stunts with multiple top persons.

d. Intentionally travel (excludes coed-style tosses to a new set of bases).

e. Pass over, under, or through other stunts, pyramids, individuals, or props.

f. Land on the performing surface without assistance from above waist level.

2. Helicopters

Allowed with:

  • Up to 360° rotation.
  • Caught by 2 catchers, 1 positioned at the head and shoulder area of the top person.
3. Rewinds / Free Flipping / Assisted Flipping

Allowed.

4. Rewinds / Free Flipping Originating from Ground Level

a. Up to 1¼ flipping and 1¼ twist allowed.
b. Cartwheel rewind, round-off rewind, and standing single back handspring rewinds are allowed.

  • No tumbling prior to the cartwheel, round-off, or standing back handspring.
    c. Toe pitch, leg pitch, or similar tosses are allowed in initiating free flipping skills.
    d. Requires 1 catcher and 1 spotter.
5. Free Flipping Transitions from a Stunt

a. Up to 1¼ flipping and 1 twist allowed.
b. Dismounts:

  • Up to 1¼ flipping and 1 twist allowed.
  • Less than 1 full flip may include up to 2 twists.
    c. Must initiate at or below prep level only.
    d. Must land in a cradle, horizontal position, vertical stunt, or standing position.
    e. Flipping + twisting dismounts may not land on the performance surface.
  • Must be caught in horizontal position with multiple catchers.
    f. 1 flip or less requires 2 catchers.
    g. 1¼ flips require 3 catchers.
6. Split Catches

Single-based split catches are not allowed.

7. All release moves that flip and twist may not land on the performance surface.

D. Inversions

1. Inversion Levels

a. Extended inverted stunts are allowed.

2. Downward Inversions

a. Must maintain contact with an original base.
b. Must have 2 catchers.

Exception: Lowering an extended inverted stunt to prep level, passing above prep level to prep level, or extended non-inverted to inverted at prep level may be done by a single base with a spotter.

3. An athlete in a backbend or inverted position on the performance surface may not be in contact with a top person.

V. PYRAMIDS

A. General
  1. Must follow Stunt Spotter Rules.Exception: 1-arm extended Paper Dolls require a spotter for each top person.
  2. Allowed up to 2½ high.
B. 2½ High Pyramids
Spotters

a. Must have a spotter in front and back for each top-level person.
b. Must maintain visual contact at all times.
c. May not be a primary support.
d. May stand slightly to the side but must adequately spot.

Tower Pyramids
  • Must have a spotter not in contact with the pyramid behind the top person.
  • A person assisting the middle layer does not fulfill this requirement.
Horizontal Top Persons
  • Must have spotters on 2 of the 4 sides (front, back, right, left).
  • Spotters cannot be on the leg side.
C. Pyramid Inversions
  1. Allowed up to 2½ high.
  2. Downward inversions from above prep level:
    a. Must be assisted by 2 bases.
    b. Must maintain contact with a base or another top person.
D. Free Flying Mounts / Transitions
  1. May not significantly exceed intended skill height.
  2. May not pass over, under, or through other stunts or props.
  3. May not land inverted.
From Ground Level

a. Up to 1 flip and 1 twist.
b. 0 flips and 2¼ twists allowed.

From Above Ground Level

a. Up to 1¼ flips and 0 twists.
b. Up to 0 flips and 2 twists.

E. Pyramid Release Moves
  1. May pass above 2½ high.
  2. May not pass over/under props.
  3. May not land inverted.
  4. If released and caught by second-layer base, throwing base must catch.
  5. From 2½ high: Up to 0 flips and 1 twist.Requires 2 catchers.
F. Braced Inversions
  1. Up to 1¼ flipping and 1 twist allowed.
  2. Must maintain contact with 1 top person at prep level or below.
  3. Must be caught by 2 catchers.

Exceptions:

  • Braced inversion to 2½ high may be caught by 1 person.
  • Braced inversions landing upright at prep level or above require 1 base and 1 spotter.

Required base/spotter must:

  • Be stationary
  • Maintain visual contact
  • Not be involved in other skills

VI. DISMOUNTS

A. General
  1. Must return to original bases.Exception: Single-based stunts with multiple top persons.
  2. Top persons may not contact each other while released.
  3. Tension drops/rolls are not allowed.
B. Dismounts to Cradle
  1. Up to 2¼ twists.
Single-Based

If exceeding 1¼ twists → spotter must support head/shoulder.

Multiple Top Persons
  • 2 catchers per top person.
  • Catchers/bases must be stationary.
1-Arm Stunts
  • If exceeding 1 twist → spotter required.
Free Flipping
  • Up to 1¼ flip and 1 twist
  • Must originate from prep level
  • Must be caught by 2 catchers (1 original base)
  • Must land in cradle, prone, or upright stunt
C. Dismounts to Performance Surface
  1. Up to 2¼ twists.
  2. If exceeding 1¼ twists → 2 catchers or 1 catcher + 1 spotter.
  3. Must be assisted by original base and/or spotter.

Exception: Straight drops or small hop-offs from waist level or below without additional skills.

  1. No landing from above waist level without assistance.
Free Flipping
  • Up to 1 flip and 0 twists
  • Must originate at or below prep level
  • Must have spotter
  • Must land vertically
D. 2½ High Pyramid – Cradle
  1. Up to 2¼ twistsMust be caught by 2 catchers (1 stationary)
  2. Up to ¾ front flip and ½ twist2 catchers (1 each side)1 catcher stationary
E. 2½ High Pyramid – Performance Surface
  1. Up to 1¼ twists
  2. 2 catchers or 1 catcher + 1 spotter
  3. Must be assisted

Exception: Straight drops or small hop-offs from waist level or below.

VII. TOSSES

A. General Toss Rules
  1. Must:
    a. Have at least 3 bases (max 4).
    b. Have base behind top person during toss.
    c. Be performed from ground level.
    d. Land in cradle catch.
    e. Have base at head/shoulder area during cradle.
    f. Not require bases to move to catch.
    g. Start with both feet in bases’ hands.
    h. Allow up to 3½ twists.
    i. Not pass over/under stunts or props.
    j. Have only 1 top person.
    k. Top person must become free of all contact.
B. Flipping Tosses

a. Up to 1¼ flipping and 2 twists
b. 2 flips and 0 twists

C. Flyover Tosses

a. Up to 0 flips and 2 twists
b. Up to ¾ front flip with ½ twist

Bases
  • Must catch in cradle with 3 bases
  • Must be stationary
Catchers
  • Must maintain visual contact throughout toss
